To start off with, I looked at the morphology of bugs, in particular worms, caterpillars, whose bodies are made up of segments, or components. Looking at these structures I began to think about a bridge that might be similarly composed, except that this 'body' would be the inhabited space.

In other words, the following two questions arose: could the bridge be some kind tube structure; and, could this structure be made up of several smaller components. To allow for connections to the outside, apertures were carved through the surfaces of this tube. And so, the first 'generic' module was born.  -dk
